Beschrijving
It is amazing that this group of islands played a role in world history for about four hundred years. After the conquest of these small islands, nutmeg trees were grown in orchards, the so-called perken, under the guidance of perkeniers.
Until these genealogies appeared, few reliable details were published about the persons from these perkenier families, apart from subjective generalities, concerning their origins, careers, social functions, economic limitations and their secondary activities. In almost all cases, it was possible to trace the ancestor and his origins of the families that were investigated, who kept perkeniers for several generations. Several of these could be traced back to the seventeenth century. In addition to the families whose ancestors came from various countries in Europe, there is also an Arab family, a Chinese family and several early liberated Christian-Mardijk (slave) families that acted as perkeniers.
The book has an introduction describing the history of the perken system, the perkeniers, their slaves and later contract workers, including a brief overview of relevant literature. The new edition contains forty genealogies with an index in which, in addition to the family names of the perkeniers families, more than twelve hundred other related “East Indian” family names appear. Here you will find an overview of the 40 families and the related families, among whom many other perkeniers were also located. Many black and white photos of family members have also been printed. The detailed descriptions of the persons in these families are accompanied by footnotes with the sources and any additional background information.
The authors of this IGV publication are descendants of perkeniers families and other genealogical researchers who have compiled the book by consulting many sources and with the help of family members together with the editorial team: Ad Lans, Boudewijn Huenges Wajer and Tjaart Schillhorn van Veen.
